Under stairs storage ideas – cupboards, drawers and racks that use the space effectively

September 6, 2021 by Louie Alma Photography No Comments

Under stairs storage ideas can be difficult to nail down, not least because this slanted space is so awkward. Its limited head height and inability accommodate standard-sized furniture often means that it remains neglected and under-used. But it doesn’t need to be.

Perhaps you have an under stairs area that has zero storage. Or a space with badly-designed storage that just ends up cluttered and untidy. However, re-thinking your under stairs space could ensure that the entire ground floor becomes neater and more organised.

From bespoke built-ins or flat-pack options, to off-the-peg furniture and DIY shelving, our round-up of clever and affordable staircase ideas incorporating storage will soon have you sorted.

Make good use of an open under stair area by creating a wall of storage. Cover the back section of wall with pegboard panelling and paint a cheery shade. Then add a row of peg rail for hanging coats and jackets, slotting in a few single hooks here and there for keys or dog leads.

Inside a Shrewsbury townhouse filled with period charm galore

September 6, 2021 by Louie Alma Photography No Comments

This stunning Shrewsbury townhouse is situated in St Alkmond’s Square within the loop of the River Severn and is now up for sale. The house is thought to date back to the late 16th century in part, so there’s tons of historical features for those that like the charm of a period property, along with exposed timbers and deep sash windows.

Having been sympathetically restored, the townhouse features four floors, four bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen’s paint hack gives you the wall panelling look with none of the effort

September 6, 2021 by Louie Alma Photography No Comments

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has shared how to get the wall-panelling look with very little effort – and at a fraction of the cost. The much-loved and endlessly flamboyant Changing Rooms star calls his wall panelling paint hack a spécialité de la maison.

The LLB paint trick harks back to the original Changing Rooms show 23 years ago, when the idea was originally conceived. This week’s episode took Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Anna Richardson to West Yorkshire to decorate two living rooms in need of some interior design know-how.

Matt, the resident painter and decorator is shown using masking tape to paint squares onto the wall. This creates a trompe l’oeil that gives the illusion of real panels.

‘This is so straightforward, because what I’ve done is, I’ve picked the colour that we’ve got the wall in, and then I just went one lighter and one darker, which gives you the shadow and the highlight,’ explains Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. As Matt the decorator peels away the masking tape, he reveals the faux wall panels.
