Electronic First Curtain Shutter: Why, When & How to Use it (VIDEO)

Electronic First Curtain Shutter: Why, When & How to Use it (VIDEO)

The tutorial below addresses a question we receive often; namely “What the heck is electronic first curtain shutter, and why would I use it over the mechanical or regular electronic shutter?” If you’ve wondered about that yourself take a look, because pro David Bergman clears up all the confusion in just about 10 minutes.

Bergman is a respected NY-based shooter specializing in sports and celebrity photography. He’s also a popular instructor, and he received the above query from a follower of his unique “Ask David Bergman” website—where readers submit questions and he answers them on the Adorama TV YouTube channel.

Some modern cameras feature a conventional mechanical shutter as well as an electronic shutter. And other models include a third option known as an electronic first curtain shutter. Interesting, there are photographers out there with cameras offering all three options, yet they’re unaware they exist—let alone how to use them.

If you always shoot with the mechanical shutter, and are oblivious to the other options available, this lesson will get you up to speed, thereby enabling you to capture better photos by using the best shutter choice for the specific task at hand.

Bergman discusses all three types of shutters and which ones he prefers for different assignments. He also explains the pros and cons of using your camera’s mechanical shutter as opposed to the electronic options.

The first thing you should do after watching the lesson is examine your camera and determine what shutter choices are available. Then consider which one is the best choice to use in various situations based upon Bergman’s advice.

You can read more questions and answers on common photographic topics by visiting the popular Ask David Bergman website. Then consider submitting a few questions of your own.

We also suggest you take a look at the recent tutorial we posted from another pro, explaining an easy way to make sure the photos you shoot are absolutely sharp.

1 Click Lightroom Trick for Better Portrait Pics (VIDEO)

You don’t have to be a professional portrait photographer to make flattering people pictures that make you and your subjects proud. In fact, sooner or later someone who knows you have a camera will solicit your expertise for photographing a party, wedding, or simple family images.

Proper editing is a big part of the process if you want to deliver the best possible photos, and the quick-and-easy tutorial below will explain how to get to done quickly and effectively with a one-click solution in Lightroom.

This straightforward episode from our friends at Photo Fitness Academy explains a unique approach, and you don’t have to an experienced Lightroom user to get the job done. Instructor David Buck provides step-by-step instructions in barely seven minutes.

As you’ll see, this method involves editing a photo using simple tools, then using Lightroom’s AI facial detection features to build your own one-click editing preset that can then be applied to one or more portraits all at once. According to Buck, “This is the most efficient way to edit a portrait with today’s image-editing programs.”

The bonus here is that after watching this lesson you’ll be able easily create and apply presets for just about any photos you shoot, from landscape scenes and macro photos to wildlife images and more. And once you’ve done that, your Lightroom workflow will be faster and more effective than ever before.

Another bonus is that before jumping into the specifics of creating presets, Buck provides a quick crash course on the basics of editing portraits, with tips on what to lighten or darken, and what to sharpen or soften to give portraits a professional look. Even if you never considered yourself a portrait specialist, you may change your mind after giving Buck’s advice a try.

You can find other simple shooting and editing techniques on Buck’s instructional YouTube channel, so head over there soon and see what meets your needs.

You may also want to check out the earlier tutorial we posted from another pro, explaining how your camera’s dynamic range affects the photos you shoot, and what to do about it.

This Food Photographer’s Career Started on a Plane to India

This Food Photographer’s Career Started on a Plane to India

How do you go from disillusioned marketing professional to food photographer with major brands on the client list? For Steven Domjancic, it involved Photography for Dummies, a journey of self-discovery to India, a stint doing video production in Taiwan, and a great domain name. In other words, pretty straightforward.

As founder, creative director, and primary photographer at SWEETnSPICY, Steven Domjancic has made a name for himself in food photography.

And he’s got an impressive client list to show for, including McCormick & Company, Marriott, Delta Air Lines, Hitachi and Whirlpool.

Key to his success is Domjancic’s attention to detail, and his exceptionally vibrant, colorful and glossy photography style.

His photos pop, which is exactly what you need to produce pictures that look as delicious as the food they’re depicting.

Of course, Domjancic did not go from zero to professional food photographer overnight. Getting to that point was a bit of a journey, quite literally.

Finding photography – in India

“About 14 years ago I lost my passion for the sales and marketing work I was doing,” he says. “I decided to travel around India while trying to figure out what I wanted to do in the future.

“A friend said to buy a DSLR camera and take some pictures while I was there.”

Domjancic says he didn’t even know shutter speed from ISO when he set out. So, he took a copy of Photography for Dummies to read on the plane and spent the next six weeks playing with his camera while backpacking around India.

“When I came home, I showed the pictures to friends. They were impressed, so I started thinking there might be something here for me.

“I had tried many things in my life, but I never even considered creative arts. I didn’t think there was a career in it.”

It was at this point that Domjancic enrolled in college to study photography.

“Once I started, something clicked and there was light at the end of the tunnel.”

Domjancic went on to launch his own studio before moving to Taiwan to work on high-end video productions.

Learning to love food photography

“About six years ago, McCormick – an international spice manufacturer – contacted me to do $100,000 worth of photography of their products and recipes.”

“Over the next couple of years, I did nearly 700 recipe photos for them. I went from never shooting food to learning, practicing, and loving it.”

Domjancic says the experience he picked up from his video production work has helped improve his food photography game.

“It can be very stressful! Like when you photograph the product catalogue for an ice cream manufacturer… The products melt, so you’re up against the clock.”

“I didn’t do much pre-production when I started out. But I quickly realized this was a recipe for disaster.”

“Now before shoots, I make shot lists and pre-production decks showing what I’m doing and what’s needed for every single shot.”

“I work with talented chefs and stylists, and I spend a lot of time preparing so that I don’t have to stress on set.”

Benefits of a great domain name

Domjancic says he puts a lot of passion and love into his work, which definitely shows in his portfolio at SWEETnSPICY.photography.

He says he initially thought of sweetnspicyphotography.com for his website, but using the full SWEETnSPICY Photography name with a .com at the end just seemed too long. Plus, the domain name was not available.

Instead, Domjancic went for a new .photography domain, which is a top-level domain extension that’s become very popular with some of the world’s best photographers.

“I liked the sound of SWEETnSPICY.photography, and I knew this domain extension would be SEO-friendly, so I decided to give it a try.”

While the SWEETnSPICY website has been online for less than a year, Domjancic says he’s already on page one of Google for food photography in his region, near Toronto.

“Not being findable really hurts someone like me. But I’m findable, and that’s huge!”

Putting to use his marketing skills from days past, Domjancic says he built most of the website himself, including the layout and content.

“When I show the brand to clients, I always get positive feedback,” he says. “They always smile when they see the logo and I get a lot of compliments on the website.

Standing out from the crowd

Photography is a very crowded industry and while Domjancic says it’s easy to get frustrated and discouraged as a new photographer, he believes there are plenty of opportunities for those who can wear multiple hats when it comes to running a business.

“Spend 40-50 hours a week on your craft – every week. Not just getting paid, but test shooting, experimenting to create the look you want, and making content for the clients you want to get.”

But, says Domjancic, just practicing your craft is not enough to succeed.

“As a photographer, you’re running a content production company,” he explains.

“You need to focus on everything from marketing, sales and customer service, to making quotes, drawing up contracts, and providing creative direction.”

He says photographers that can put all of this together have a great chance of succeeding.

“It’s a competitive industry. There are lots of skilled photographers, but not a lot of great marketers.”

Every bit counts when trying to stand out in a crowded market. Whether you’re just getting started or you’re ready to take your photography business to the next level, a .photography domain extension shows the world you’re serious about your photography.

Join the ranks of thousands of professional photographers with an SEO-optimized domain.

And, since your desired .photography domain is more likely to be available than the .com equivalent, you won’t have to worry about compromising on your personal brand identity.

Your work deserves a .photography domain.

Last Frame: An Uncertain Pelican

“I found this brown pelican waking on a cloudy, cold morning—especially for southern Louisiana—after a shower passed over the area earlier that morning,” explains Dawn Wilson. “There’s a series of pilings along a canal near Lake Pontchartrain where pelicans and other coastal birds rest each evening. The morning can be a great time to catch the birds stirring before they head out to the lake to fish. This particular morning was December 30, 2020, when the world was still reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic. This bird’s very vigorous shake caused his wings to shrug and made me think he asked, ‘What will 2021 be like?’”
