Travel Guide to Porto Santo, Portugal

June 30, 2024 by Louie Alma Photography No Comments

Travel Guide to Porto Santo, Portugal

“Welcome to the smallest desert in the world”  Nuno my guide to Porto Santo was clearly enjoying his local joke, but, then again, it is a sandy desert, and it is very small.

Smallest dessert

Fonte da Areia, Smallest desert

Fonte Da Areia (sand fountain) is a remarkable geological remnant from the dawn of time. Jagged limestone formations and supersoft sand dunes. Alas, erosion and industry greatly diminished this stunning slice of the natural world, but now safely protected, it offers a glimpse of perhaps why the famed explorer Christopher Columbus was so fond of this tiny island.

About  Porto Santo

Porto Santo is just a short distance from its big sister Madeira. Just 15 minutes by air or 150 minutes by ferry, but the difference is extraordinary.

Porto Santo’s primary appeal is its 9 kilometres of glorious soft golden beaches, a feature you won’t see anywhere in big sister. These super soft grains were originally biogenic coral and the unique minerals they contain are used here in a hot sand spa treatment known as Psamotherapy.

Ponta da Calheta-Praia

Then there’s the colour of the seawater; a translucent turquoise that would make any Caribbean tourist board proud.

The uninhabited rugged north, devoid of water, electricity, and urban development, is a geologist’s dream. Dramatic peaks stuffed with examples of seismic activity offer exciting hiking trails through an undisturbed natural landscape.

Since 2020 it is an official UNESCO biosphere reserve; scrupulously protecting its landscapes, ecosystems, and endemic species, but also committing to supporting local culture and traditions. Seawater is desalinated into drinking water, and even the golf complex is irrigated using toilet water.

But perhaps the best example of the island’s appeal is its tranquillity. Aside from August when Madeirans descend to their second homes for the month, it is blissfully quiet for the rest of the year.

Porto Santo was once a thriving producer of dry-farmed cereals through its lack of rainfall and mined limestone from nearby islet lhéu da Cal was also a rich source of income. That all changed when cheaper and more accessible countries got in on the act, so today it is tourism that is Porto Santo’s saviour, and they are waiting with wide open arms. This guide to Porto Santo will show just what you’re missing.

Vila Baleira

Porto Santo’s capital may be small, but it packs a lot in and it’s a perfect base right next to its famous beach. When I was there recently, they were getting ready for the Festas de São João the annual 4-day mid-summer celebration of the island’s patron saint beginning this year on 22 June 2024. Always a very lively event.

The town is centred around the pretty main square Largo do Pelourinho, lined with palm trees and bougainvillea and the nearby cobbled streets are lovely to stroll around. Look out for the small stalls on taxi corner selling freshly baked bolo do caco the famous Madeiran circular bread; delicious toasted and spread with garlic butter. Although the locals will swear a fresh untoasted bolo do caco filled simply with hot steak and garlic is the best lunch ever.

Just off the square, Casa Museu Colombo doubles as Christopher Columbus’s house and the main museum. He is said to have lived here in 1470, following his marriage to the Governor’s daughter, but whether he did or not, the museum has been extended via a small bridge to a neighbouring house and is well worth a visit. It’s collection of historic model Portuguese sailing ships is a highlight. As is a little sit down in the pretty garden shaded by dragon trees.

Calheta

Travel along the beach road from town, or simply walk along the beach and you’ll end up at the sand dunes of Calheta Beach right at the southern tip of the island. Some wonderful rock formations here, and the crystal-clear seawater is perfect for swimming. Historic lhéu da Cal looms nearby and on clear days you can spot the various cave entrances to those limestone mines.

There’s an important project going on here to protect the sand dunes from wind erosion through planting wild coastal flora and laying down wooded walkways around the dunes.

This is the spot locals come to for glorious sunset views and sipping sundowners at the beach bar as the evening turns to night.

Out in the countryside of Porto Santo

No guide to Porto Santo would be complete without touring the countryside. Once out of town, the wild primitive beauty of the island is the headline act.

Drive past lonely windmills, ancient relics of the once prosperous cereal empire, and around sweeping valleys and soaring peaks. Talking of the cereal industry, a popular stop is at Casa de Serra. Once an original cereal farmer’s house and still owned by the latest generation of the family, it’s a small museum chronicling the islanders’ way of life. They also make their own liqueurs and offer tastings.

Qta das Palmeiras ©Francisco Correia

Quinta das Palmeiras ©Francisco Correia

Make sure you make a stop at Quinta dos Palmeiras, a quite extraordinary place that has been welcoming visitors since 1993. A personal obsession of owner Carlos Manuel, who decided to build this eccentric botanical garden and bird zoo with his own hands in the middle of nowhere. It is a beautiful, serene place to wander around and admire his handiwork.

The water used in the ponds and streams is all recycled and even though some birds are caged, they all seem to be perfectly happy. I fell in love with the two parrots perched up at the café. They love to be stroked, talk in various languages, and will even perch themselves on your wrist if you offer it.

Carlos sits in his little hut at the entrance most days. An absolute steal at €3 and kids are free!

Hike Pico Branco

Pico Branco is Porto Santo’s second highest peak at 450m and at just 2.7 km each way should be accessible for most levels of fitness and take around two and a half hours. Originally a route for mules, the trail zig zags its way past indigenous flora and geology offering up some spectacular views. Make sure you continue at the top around to the little house called Terra Chã perched at the end of a promontory. It can be hired for an overnight stay, but there are tables out on the deck if you want to stop, eat, and admire the view before turning back.

Porto Santo Golf Club

Porto Santo Golf

Porto Santo Golf ©Nuno Andrade

This impressive 18-hole championship course was designed by the late great Seve Ballesteros in 2004 and boasts plenty of water hazards and three stunning signature holes over cliff-top canyons beside crashing waves. Along with the main course there’s a 9-hole pitch and putt and a further 18 holes are planned soon.

Just opposite the club is a sensational example of why the island’s geology gets scientists so excited. The immense array of basalt columns of Pico de Ana Ferreira have stood like giant organ pipes for millions of years.

Take a Zodiac boat trip

The prospect of whale and dolphin watching, or any other form of sea life are normally enough of a magnet to take a trip around the local archipelago. But during this two-hour tour you’ll also get some time to snorkel at a remote spot with plenty of colourful fish for company and get to hear some fascinating local tales along the route.

Hot Sand Therapy

The sand here is filled with minerals, in particular calcium and magnesium. So, the theory is that lying buried in this heated sand will allow the minerals to be absorbed through your sweat into your skin.

I have to say, lying in what I can only describe as a sarcophagus, while someone buries you in hot sand from a giant hose, is a little disconcerting. But once filled, with just my head poking out, I felt gloriously warm and comfortable and left to doze for 30 minutes, I was willing the magnesium to flow through my skin. Afterwards, I honestly felt very rested and relaxed.

As you can see with this guide to Porto Santo the island has so much to offer in so many ways I’m astounded it hasn’t realised its potential as a major holiday destination yet. I suggest you go and enjoy it before it does!

TRAVEL GUIDE: Missouri, USA

TRAVEL GUIDE: Missouri, USA

Missouri is one of those destinations that doesn’t make for instant recognition, but mention St Louis and Kansas City and people understand where you’re talking about. Each city sits on either side of the state, both with a long Jazz history and now are reinventing themselves. A drive between the two of them takes you to the home of Route 66, then through the Ozark Mountains and ends up in wine country.

Kansas City

Kansas City

Kansas City is experiencing something of a rebirth with a new sense of optimism throughout. Downtown is sprouting hotels, Maine Street has a free trolley bus and the riverside is undergoing huge redevelopment.

Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium

Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium

Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium

While zoos have been declining in Europe, the Kansas City Zoo has just added a state-of-the art Aquarium on its huge site spanning over 80 hectares. Home to more than 1700 animals, there are distinct sections allocated to different regions of the world. Africa is particularly impressive, featuring a savanna where elephants, giraffes, zebras, and antelopes roam freely. Even better a chair lift allows you to complete an African Sky Safari.

Rock Island Bridge

Rock Island Bridge

Rock Island Bridge

Rock Island Bridge

Built in 1905 this railway bridge crosses the Kansas River connecting Missouri and Kansas. It fell out of use in the 1970’s, rusting away, until Mike Zeller had the idea of siting a restaurant there. The project grew and when it opens later this year it will be a unique entertainment complex providing music, dining, coffee shops and bars. It’s the first of its kind in the world and will definitely become a must-see.

National WW1 Museum and Memorial

WW1 Museum and Memorial

WW1 Museum

The Liberty Memorial Tower, completed in 1926 is an iconic structure that rises 217 feet above the city. Built into the hill below is the WW1 Museum and a glass bridge suspended over a field of 9000 red poppies takes you into two massive galleries. The first provides an overview of the war’s causes whilst the second explores the war itself. Weapons, uniforms and interactive displays bring the history to life.

Union Station

Union Station

Union Station

Sitting just below the Memorial is Union Station, opened in 1914 and once one of the busiest stations in the country. It’s huge and features a majestic Grand Hall with 95-foot ceilings, adorned with three 3,500-pound chandeliers and a six-foot-wide clock. It closed in 1985 but has now been completely reinvented as a bustling cultural centre with exhibitions and several restaurants and cafes. You can even catch an Amtrak train from here.

Springfield

Springfield

The story of Route 66 begins in Springfield in 1926, when officials gathered to thrash out the name for the new highway that would connect Chicago to Santa Monica. Examples of the city’s Route 66 heritage can be found throughout the town, starting at the History Museum on the Square.

Rail Haven Motel

Rockwood Motor COurt

College St Cafe

Route 66 Car Museum

The Rockwood Motor Court tourist camp has been restored but the Rail Haven Motel has been in continous business since 1938. There’s the College Street Café, a restored diner, serving quintessential highway dishes with the Route 66 classic car museum next door.

Route 66

Gay Parita

Spencer Filling Station

Even better you can drive west on part of the original road now quiet as it’s been bypassed by the highway.  A steel girder bridge leads to Gay Parita, a fully restored service station with vehicles and paraphernalia of the era. Slightly further on is Spencer Phillips 66 Service Station which includes a general store, filling station, cafe and barber shop.

Branson

Sitting in the heart of the Ozark Mountains, Branson blends natural beauty, thrilling adventure parks and good old fashioned entertainment. It’s famously known as the “Live Music Show Capital of the World” with more than 50 theatres staging 100 shows a day. Take your pick out of country, gospel, rock ‘n’ roll and Broadway-style productions.

Branson

Branson

Branson

Yet Branson’s natural surroundings provide an ideal playground for outdoor enthusiasts. The pristine waters of Table Rock Lake are perfect for a variety of activities such as boating, fishing, and swimming. Dogwood Canyon Nature offers 10,000 acres of forest hills and valleys with trails for hiking, biking, and horse riding.

For thrill seekers, the Shepherd of the Hills Adventure has the Vigilante Extreme ZipRider, descending over half a mile at speeds of up to 50 mph.  More family friendly is Silver Dollar City, a 19th century theme park with over 40 rides, live entertainment and craft demonstrations. Highlights include the thrilling Time Traveller roller coaster, and the Marvel Cave, a natural underground wonder.

Hermann

Stone Hill Winery

Stone Hill Winery

Stone Hill Winery

The Ozarks stretch north giving way to undulating countryside, around the Missouri River, perfect for vines. Hermann was founded in 1837 by German settlers and the town’s well-preserved 19th-century architecture and cobblestone streets reflects that heritage. They also brought their wine making expertise with them and the wine trail includes seven family owned vineyards. Stone Hill Winery is one of the best and offers tastings and tours of its cellars.

Katy Trail

Hermann is also the location for numerous outdoor activities. The Katy Trail State Park, which stretches the length of the state, following the Missouri River, is perfect for biking and hiking. Even better, if you complete the entire 240 mile route you can take the St Louis – Kansas City train back to your starting point.

St Charles

St Charles

St Charles

St Charles

East of Hermann, St Charles is near the starting point of the Katy Trail and is renowned for its well-preserved historical district, with Main Street being the crown jewel. It’s lined with charming 19th-century buildings, now housing an array of boutiques, antique shops, and restaurants.

St Charles

St Charles

St Charles

From 1821 to 1826, St. Charles served as the capital of Missouri, and the state’s first government met in buildings on Main Street. These have now been restored and visitors can tour the historic rooms and learn about the early political struggles and triumphs of Missouri. Nearby is a Coca-Cola museum which houses an impressive collection of memorabilia, including vintage bottles, advertising posters, and vending machines.

St Louis

St Louis

St Louis Arch

St Louis Arch

On the western bank of the Mississippi River, St. Louis is a city often referred to as the “Gateway to the West”. This is commemorated with the Gateway Arch, a stainless steel monument standing 192m tall, built in 1965. It’s impressive enough, dominating the riverside, but inside a tram takes you to the top for stunning views of the city and the river.

City Museum

In the heart of downtown, the City has transformed the derelict International Shoe Company building into a wonderland of creativity and exploration. It opened in 1997, the brainchild of artist Bob Cassilly who used salvaged materials to create a fantasy playground for visitors of all ages. The museum continues to evolve, with new exhibits and features regularly added.

The Enchanted Caves is a labyrinthine network of tunnels and passageways that wind through the museum’s interior. In the summer, the rooftop becomes an urban playground complete with Ferris wheel and school bus linked by a series of slides.

Missouri Botanical Garden

Founded in 1859, the 79-acre Missouri Botanical Garden is one of the oldest in the United States. One of the garden’s most iconic structures, the Climatron® is a geodesic dome that houses a lush tropical rainforest with more than 2,800 plants. Winding paths lead through dense foliage, including towering palms, exotic flowers, and rare orchids.

WotanCraft Paracord X Leather Straps

June 30, 2024 by Louie Alma Photography No Comments

WotanCraft Paracord X Leather Straps

Featuring thick, vegetable-tanned leather and the amazing tensile strength of seven-strand nylon parachute rope, WotanCraft Paracord X leather neck straps and wrist straps are available with traditional split ring or Peak Design Anchor Lock fasteners and are as attractive as they are practical. With a style that harkens back to their military inspiration, they add another dimension to WotanCraft’s already extensive line of beautifully designed photo accessories.

Key Features
• Vegetable-tanned, high-quality leather
• Thick, hand-stitched linen thread
• Ultra-strong Peak Design Anchor Lock option
• Japanese CURA Split ring option
• Seven-strand nylon paracord rated at 550 pounds
• More than 100 style/color variations
• Hand-finished detailsSpecific Pertinent Details
Atwood Paracord 550 is made in the US to the highest possible standards. Constructed around seven strands of nylon inner core, Paracord 550 has a tensile strength of 550 pounds and is resistant to moisture and UV radiation. It’s universally used by outdoor enthusiasts and is a staple found in every emergency kit. Paracord is often fashioned into bracelets worn by adventurers who insist on having it always available when needed. By combining this uber-durable material with top-quality leather, WotanCraft has created the “Parashooter” lineup of camera wrist and neck straps that offer rugged styling and outstanding performance.

Peak Design Anchor Locks are legendary and are rapidly becoming the de facto standard for all camera straps. We’ve reviewed them many times at Shutterbug, including here. Anchor Locks make it a literal snap to remove or switch straps via their quick-release design, so you can share one strap among several cameras, or switch from neck to wrist carry.

Traditionalists will appreciate the O-style Japanese-made CURA split rings. Each CURA ring undergoes 20 hours of polishing to ensure a smooth finish. Adding to their vintage feel, they gradually reveal their copper-colored core as they age in the same way a black-painted camera slowly wears to expose its brass underlayer. Split rings do not always work well with cameras that have slot-type attachment points, so consider carefully.

WotanCraft manufacturers amazing watch straps, shoulder bags, photo backpacks, bicycle packs, sling bags and genuine leather camera straps as well as other photo accessories. Their Pilot 7 camera bag — reviewed by us here — is the best-looking bag we’ve ever tested, and it’s functional, practical and extremely durable.

Reasons to Buy Today
Exceptional high quality
Unique appearance
Extreme durability
Available with popular PD Anchor Locks
Available in >100 style/color variations
High leverage value-for-dollar proposition

Reasons to Shy Away
Rugged styling is not to everyone’s taste
Leather straps are sometimes difficult to coil into a camera bag

Sum & Substance
WotanCraft Paracord X leather straps are highly recommended. We’ve been using the PD Anchor Lock version of both the neck strap and wrist strap for over a month and give them high marks. The balance between leather and paracord is just right, so the straps are surprisingly comfortable, even for all-day carry. We advocate the Anchor Lock version because it’s easy to switch between wrist and neck carry, or to a thinner strap when desired.

Price & Availability
WotanCraft Paracord X “Parashooter” straps are available in over 100 styles/colors (all variations included) so you’re sure to find exactly what you want. Most neck straps cost $99. Most wrist straps, $49. Both include a multipurpose cloth dust bag. Order directly from WotanCraft. Free international shipping to US.

Want to Shoot Dazzling FIREWORKS Photos? Use This Simple Formula (VIDEO)

Want to Shoot Dazzling FIREWORKS Photos? Use This Simple Formula (VIDEO)

Just in case you’ve been living abroad in a cave, we thought we’d remind you that Independence Day in the U.S.is right around the corner. And that means it’s time to bone up on your fireworks photography skills. This tutorial from the Shutter Speak YouTube channel explains a simple and “foolproof” formula for achieving dazzling results.

Watching fireworks displays is usually a breathtaking experience but capturing the magic with a camera can be difficult if you don’t know a few tricks that you’ll learn in this episode with instructor Joseph Nuzzo. As he says, “in this video we’ll show you how to take amazing fireworks photos in seconds, using simple techniques that anyone can master whether you’re a beginner or a time-tested veteran.

Nuzzo is working with a Nikon Z, but the settings and tips he recommends will work equally well with whatever brand of camera you own. You may have to dig around in the menu a bit to find exactly what you’re looking for, but success will be yours if you do as he says.

This first thing you’ll see is that a sturdy tripod is “absolutely essential” for this type of photography—just as it is whenever you’re shooting with slow shutter speeds. Most of you already know the importance of this accessory so we won’t belabor the point here.

Next you’ll want to switch the Exposure mode to Manual so that you can dial in  the specific exposure setting for this this super simple formula. Here’s what you need to do: Set the aperture to f/11, then choose a shutter speed of 3 seconds. The final step is to make sure that Auto ISO is turned off and select ISO 200 instead.

You’re pretty much ready to go when the camera is configured in this way. or a Nuzzo says, “all you have to do now is take pictures.” He notes that you can modify the shutter speed if you wish to experiment with longer light trails. But be sure to keep the other settings unchanged.

Nuzzo recommends starting with a three second shutter speed and not increasing the setting by more than two stops—otherwise overexposure may rear its ugly head. You’ll also see why Nuzzo suggests dialing things back to three seconds during the grand finale when the sky is full of spectacular fireworks bursts.

There are few extra tweaks for enhancing your results, but the foregoing basics will definitely get the job done. Once you’ve done watching, take a look at Nuzzo’s instructional YouTube channel where you find more straightforward methods for making easy work of seemingly difficult tasks.

We also suggest checking out the related tutorial we featured with another accomplished pro who dispels the common myth that your camera’s Manual mode is more complex than Auto modes and how to use it to take perfectly exposed photos in difficult light.
