Hiking in the High Tatra Mountains, Slovakia

August 12, 2026 by Louie Alma Photography No Comments

Hiking in the High Tatra Mountains, Slovakia

The High Tatras of Slovakia are among Europe’s most spectacular mountain hiking destinations, offering dramatic granite peaks, crystal-clear alpine lakes, well-maintained hiking trails, and a network of historic mountain huts that have welcomed adventurers for generations.

Tatras

Tatras

Tatras

Although smaller than the Alps, the Tatras pack an incredible variety of landscapes into a compact area, making them an ideal destination for hikers of all experience levels. Whether you’re planning a gentle lakeside walk or a challenging ascent into the high mountains, there’s unforgettable scenery at every turn.

Tatras

Tatras

Tatras

They’re part of a protected national park with delicate alpine ecosystems. Visitors are encouraged to remain on marked trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and carry all rubbish back with them. Respecting seasonal trail closures also helps protect nesting birds and fragile mountain habitats.

And they’re popular with locals. At weekends families, often with fathers carrying babies on their backs, set out to do serious hiking together. In the mountain huts and restaurants, tables are full, as people tuck into the local Slovak delicacies. It’s rare to hear English spoken here, but hotel and restaurant staff are always fairly fluent.

Day 1 Skalnaté Pleso to Veľká Svišťovka

Unlike the rest of Europe, the Tatras have had a cool summer and my first day is no exception. There’s cloud hugging the mountains as I take the cable car from Tatranská Lomnica, where I’m staying, up to Skalnaté Pleso. At an elevation of 1,346 metres, this picturesque glacial lake is surrounded by mountain peaks, sadly now in the mist.

Skalnaté pleso

Skalnaté pleso

Skalnaté pleso

Above me is Lomnický štít, Slovakia’s second-highest mountain, invisible today, but my destination is Veľká Svišťovka at 2,037 metres. The well-marked trail climbs steadily over rocky terrain and there are occasional glimpses into the valley below. It starts to rain heavily, the wind picks up and the temperature drops.

Skalnaté pleso

After around an hour, I reach the saddle, Sedlo pod Svišťovkou, but decide not to climb up to Veľká Svišťovka. Apparently, on a clear day, there are panoramic views over the valleys of the High Tatras, the forests below and the distant Low Tatras beyond. At the moment, visibility is near zero so I retrace my steps and take the cable car back down where it’s warm and dry. It’s  a warning that you should never underestimate the mountains.

Day 2 Štrbské Pleso to Popradské Pleso

Štrbské Pleso Train

Štrbské Pleso

Štrbské Pleso

The railway, running along the base of the mountains, has frequent trains to Štrbské Pleso. It’s a pleasant ride and, since the cloud has cleared, I skirt the lake and take the chairlift to the upper slopes of Predné Solisko, at 1840 metres. For the first time I’m rewarded with sweeping views across the High Tatras and the plains below. A short trail leads to the summit but I’ve no time to linger.

Štrbské Pleso

After taking the chairlift back down to the lake shore, I set out for Popradské Pleso. The well-marked route follows a gently ascending forest path through fragrant pine woods. Occasional openings in the trees reveal glimpses of the granite peaks rising high above the valley.

After around an hour’s walk, the forest gives way to the beautiful glacial lake of Popradské Pleso, at almost 1,500 metres, sitting beneath the imposing walls of Ostrva and other surrounding peaks. Lunch is beside the lake at the welcoming Horský Hotel Popradské Pleso, where I enjoy a traditional Slovak garlic soup. From here it’s around an hour on the road down to the train station.

Day 3 Hrebienok to Téryho Chata and return

Train

Stary Smokovec

Funicular

Again I start with the train to Starý Smokovec, then it’s a ride on the historic funicular to Hrebienok, 1,285 metres. 10 minutes downhill from here is Bilíkova chata, the mountain hut where I’ll be spending the night. I leave my bag and hit the trail.

Hrebienok

Stream

The path winds through pine forest passing waterfalls tumbling over polished granite rocks. The most spectacular is Obrovský Vodopád (Giant’s Waterfall). Wooden bridges cross the stream, and the trail becomes progressively steeper as it enters the heart of the valley. A welcome rest spot at Zamkovského chata at 1475 metres helps me prepare for the next challenging section.

Waterfalls

Bridge

Waterfall

I climb upwards in the forest then emerge to a rock face called Vieľký Hank (Great Slope. I’m surrounded by towering cliffs, rocky buttresses and glacial scenery shaped during the last Ice Age. A series of step zigzags eventually lead to Téryho chata, at 2,015 metres. The mountain hut, first opened in 1899, is one of the highest in the High Tatras, and provides a welcome lunch.

Hrebienok Walk

Hrebienok Walk

Hrebienok Walk

The return journey follows the same route back through the Malá Studená Valley, offering fresh perspectives on the waterfalls and mountain scenery. At least it’s mainly downhill and there’s excellent cold beer back at Bilíkova chata. I’m also pleased to discover that I won’t be sharing a dormitory as is usual in mountain huts, but have a room to myself.

Hrebienok Walk

Hrebienok Walk

Bilikova chata

Few destinations combine natural beauty, accessible hiking, and rich mountain traditions as successfully as Slovakia’s High Tatras. Whether you’re admiring the tranquil waters of Štrbské Pleso, enjoying the peaceful surroundings of Popradské Pleso, resting at Bilíkova Chata, tackling the rewarding climb to Téryho Chata, or taking in panoramic views from Skalnaté Pleso, every journey reveals another remarkable aspect of these extraordinary mountains.

This £4 supermarket buy has made my kitchen bin smell like a spa retreat – I’m not lying, it genuinely smells divine

This £4 supermarket buy has made my kitchen bin smell like a spa retreat – I’m not lying, it genuinely smells divine

This summer, I’ve been testing out Febreze’s new Bin Fresheners (£5.99, Amazon), and I’m not lying when I say my bin actually smells good?! They’ve been brilliant at banishing bad smells from my kitchen bins.

In hot weather, it doesn’t take long until rubbish starts to smell and fruit flies flock to your home as a result. While we all should be cleaning a kitchen bin regularly during summer, sometimes this isn’t enough to stop the pong.

So, any product that promises to stop my bin from smelling, I’m more than willing to try. And I was genuinely left impressed with Febreze’s new Bin Fresheners. My bin has never smelled so good.

Febreze Bin Freshener Refill Pack Outdoor Fresh 4x4.88ml

You can order the bin fresheners from Amazon, but they’re also available for £4 from supermarkets like Tesco and Savers. For £5.99, you get four fragrance refills, meaning you get 180 days of a lovely smelling bin.

When I moved into my flat last year, I swapped out a standard plastic waste bin for Habitat’s 55 Litre Twin Compartment Pedal Bin (£70) as its space-saving design was better suited to my small kitchen. It’s proved incredibly easy to clean, and I’ve noticed fewer smells leak through than a kitchen bin.

However, during this year’s heat waves, I have noticed bad smells when I open the lid. So, when I got my hands on the Febreze Bin Fresheners, I was excited to try them. They’re incredibly easy to use. You simply clean and dry the lid, insert the fragrance capsule into the holder and stick it to the lid via its adhesive liner.

And from that moment onwards, there genuinely is a big difference between how my bin smelt before and after. I’d opted for the Outdoor Fresh scent, and every time I opened my bin it smelt almost spa-like. And no, that’s not a sentence I ever thought I’d write.

The fragrance pods last up to 45 days in a row, and in my experience, mask smells for that entire time. Febreze claims the fresheners fight up to 99% of common bin odours. I’m inclined to agree.

Having tested the fresheners out on my regular waste bin, I’m planning to pick up more pods and apply one to my food waste bin. I currently use the bicarbonate of soda hack to stop my food waste bin from smelling, but Febreze’s pods have proved more effective in my experience with my general waste bin.

Of course, you shouldn’t replace good bin hygiene with fragrance. Febreze’s pods are not designed to clean your bin, simply to mask poor smells. However, I have also noticed a reduction in flies this year compared to last year in my kitchen. Flies are attracted to decomposing food and rubbish, so your bin is a hotspot for attracting them. But while my bin now smells great to me, it’s less attractive for flies.

This handy little cleaning buy has earned a permanent place on my list of best cleaning products. It’s managed to make the inside of my kitchen bin smell like a spa retreat, and that is something short of a miracle.

Habitat just launched a ‘pillow’ sofa bed for £235, and I think this soft and squishy look is about to become the next big trend

August 12, 2026 by Louie Alma Photography No Comments

Habitat just launched a ‘pillow’ sofa bed for £235, and I think this soft and squishy look is about to become the next big trend

If you’re in the market for a sofa bed, I think Habitat is *the* place to shop right now. Especially if you want a budget-friendly design that’s perfect for smaller homes.

The brand has just launched a brand new collection of sofa and chair beds, and there’s one design in particular that has really caught my eye.

Habitat’s new ‘Pillow’ sofa bed costs just £235, and I think its soft and squishy look sums up one of the year’s biggest furniture trends.

Habitat Pillow Single Fabric Chairbed - Blue

The new launch is available in a single or double design.

As Ideal Home’s Sleep Editor, I’ve spent the past five years testing the best sofa beds and best chair beds on the market, and in the past year, I’ve noticed a growing trend.

This year, ‘pillow’ furniture is having a moment, and thanks to its soft, squishy, and cocooning vibes, I think it’s a look that’s here to stay.

I first noticed this trend in the bedroom. This year’s bedroom trends are all about turning the sleep space into a restful retreat; a look achieved with tactile fabrics, nurturing colours, and furniture with soft, curvaceous, and ‘pillowy’ shapes.

It began with headboard trends. At the start of 2026, clean lines and hard edges were very clearly on their way out, and soft, padded, and pillowy bed trends were on the way in.

The idea was to create a sleep space that felt cocooning, restful, and like somewhere you wanted to curl up and ‘nest’ for a while.

Now, the look has reached the world of sofa beds, and I think Habitat’s new launch nails it perfectly.

Habitat Pillow Chair Bed

The aptly named Pillow chair bed looks exactly like you might expect. It’s an elevated version of Habitat’s bestselling Roma chair bed, but this new Pillow version has softer corners designed to resemble a pillow.

It’s a small detail, yes. But it’s often the small details that elevate a piece of furniture from run-of-the-mill to understated-luxe, and I think it’s definitely a hosting solution to have on your radar as a result.

And not least, because at £295 for the single chair bed, and £365 for the double, this new overnight hosting solution is a stylish option that is also far more affordable than it looks.

I’ve rounded up some of the alternatives on the market below, and as you’ll see, Habitat’s options are by *far* the most budget-friendly.

Habitat Pillow Single Fabric Chairbed - Blue

Habitat
Pillow Fabric Double Chair Bed

Habitat’s Pillow chair bed may lack arms, but that makes it a great option for small rooms were space is at a premium. And, if you do have a little more room to play with, the larger £365 Habitat Pillow Fabric Double Chair Bed is another great buy.

Swyft Model 08 Chair Bed

Swyft
Model 08 Chair Bed Single Sofa Bed

Swyft’s 08 chair and sofa beds are some other great pillow-style options. Their flat-packed designs are also super useful for those with awkward access. However, they are more of an investment.

Darlings of Chelsea, Greenwich Medium Sofa Bed

Darlings of Chelsea
Greenwich Medium Sofa Bed

Similarly, Darlings of Chelsea’s Lyndhurst sofa bed nails the pillow look both in its pillow-shaped backrest and pillow-effect armrests. However, this pull-out guest bed is a lot more money.

Habitat is often the first brand to adapt designer looks for the high street, and I think its new Pillow chair bed will quickly become another trendsetter.

I expect plenty more pillowy shapes to emerge on the high street in the last half of 2026 and beyond, but will they be as well-priced as this Habitat option? I doubt it.

So, if you’re looking for a small-space hosting solution that wins in the comfort, style, *and* budget-friendly stakes, I certainly think this chair bed is it.

This new armchair from Habitat’s autumn 2026 collection looks designer – but it’s under £300, so snap it up while you can

This new armchair from Habitat’s autumn 2026 collection looks designer – but it’s under £300, so snap it up while you can

Even though it’s still the middle of the summer and temperatures are regularly climbing above 30°C, Habitat just dropped its autumn collection. Several pieces from the range are already trending, including the new Habitat Drape armchair.

The Habitat autumn/winter 2026 lookbook was released at the end of last month, confirming the trending autumn colour palette I’ve been seeing across a few different collections. But when I first laid eyes on the designer-style Drape armchair, I was expecting a price tag well over £500. So I was pleasantly surprised by the £275 price point.

Habitat Drape fabric armchair

Given the high-end look of this accent chair paired with the affordable price point, I’m sure it’s going to fly off the shelves very soon – especially since it’s already trending on the Habitat website. So if you like the look of this stylish chair, better snap it up now while you still can.

In many ways, the sculptural Habitat Drape armchair reminds me of the H&M Home chrome lounge chair which I named my favourite accent chair last year. The Drape chair has a similar curvaceous shape with exposed legs ‘draped’ with cushioning done in textured upholstery. But while H&M’s chair featured a then-trending chrome frame, Habitat’s chair comes with a solid oak wood frame instead.

For autumn and winter 2026, Habitat’s collection is leaning into a layered and textured look that feels cosy and comfortable. ‘For autumn/winter 2026, our design studio explores expressive, layered interiors that feel intentional and considered,’ says Nina Findley, director of product at Habitat. ‘The collection balances comfort and warmth with individuality, craftsmanship and purposeful design.’

I haven’t been able to test the Drape armchair IRL as of yet but I hope I’ll get to try it soon as the brand also praises its high comfort.

Alternatives

But while we’re on the topic of new-in Habitat armchairs, I also spotted a couple more designs that I think are worth investing in.

Habitat Vinny Fabric Armchair - Khaki

Habitat

If you want to make more of a statement with your choice of armchair then the Vinny is the one. It’s upholstered in a juacquard check fabric in earthy tones with textured feel and equipped with curved armrests.

Habitat Cub Fabric Swivel Chair - Brown

Habitat

Swivel chairs have been having a moment lately. And Habitat’s take is one of the most elevated I’ve seen. Inspired by the mid-century aesthetic, the chair is fitted with a retro swivel stand in the most stylish way.

Which Habitat armchair speaks to you?
