The most common route is taking the I-5 South, and that’s around 220 miles, which will take about 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours. Try to plan your journey to avoid rush hours – early mornings or early afternoons might be your best bet to enjoy a smoother ride.

Since you’re driving along the coast, consider making a pit stop in Malibu or Santa Monica for some beach vibes and maybe a quick snack!

Why Visit

This charming city has it all – from breathtaking beaches that’ll make your Instagram followers jealous to the nearby wine country. You can even hop on a whale-watching excursion for an unforgettable experience!

Santa Barbara is also well known for its culinary scene, so be sure to try the street tacos, the tri-tip sandwiches, and the fresh seafood.

Why Visit

Catalina Island is a hidden gem just off the Southern California coast, and totally worth the trip! With its crystal-clear waters and the charming little town of Avalon, it’s the perfect escape. You can zip around on a golf cart, snorkel in the ocean, or just kick back with a drink overlooking the Pacific.

It’s also a great spot to camp in the summer. I’ve camped at Two Harbors Campground a couple of times and they were very memorable trips.

Be sure to fuel up before you hit the road – gas stations are a rare sight out on this desert route!

Joshua Tree National Park is an incredible park that you should definitely check out if you’re anywhere nearby. Whether you’re a nature buff, a rock climber, or just someone in need of a break from city life, Joshua Tree has you covered.

The hiking trails range from easy strolls to more challenging hikes, and the unique plants and rock formations are like nowhere else on Earth. This is also one of the best places in the United States for stargazing. It’s actually a certified Dark Sky Park, so don’t miss the chance to experience the night sky while you’re there.

Laguna Beach is a fantastic spot to visit for several reasons. The beautiful beaches, like Crescent Bay and Thousand Steps, are great for relaxing and swimming.

The town has a lively art scene with tons of galleries, and you can also explore nature at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, which has scenic trails and great views.

This gorgeous area nestled in the San Bernardino National Forest is such a treat. In the summer take in the hiking and mountain biking and hit the water for fishing a kayaking. In the winter, hit the slopes or hang out in the village filled with cozy cabins and cute shops.

To get to San Francisco, you’ll take a 7 to 8 hour drive – mostly up the I-5 – or hop on a quick 1 1/2 hour flight (which is my preferred way to take a quick trip to San Francisco from San Diego).

If you choose to drive, I recommend planning your pit stops strategically. Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, and Monterey are all solid choices for a snack break or some sightseeing. Also, keep an eye on the gas gauge, especially on the more remote stretches.

San Francisco is a city with a personality all its own, and there are countless reasons to drop by. From the Golden Gate Bridge to the hilly streets and the historic cable cars, this iconic California city is a must-see.

This city is a a foodie’s paradise and is full of eclectic neighborhood and sights that you won’t want to miss.

Death Valley National Park is about 5 to 6 hours from San Diego. You’ll take the I-15 North and then the CA-127 North, which takes you right into the heart of Death Valley. Be sure to check your gas gauge and pack some water because, well, it’s a desert out there!

Death Valley National Park is a fantastic spot for a weekend getaway. The landscapes, from the salt flats to the towering sand dunes, create an otherworldly setting. Explore the lowest point in North America, take in the views from Zabriskie Point, and soak in the wonders of the desert.

During my weekend trip to Death Valley, I stayed at The Inn at Death Valley and this four-diamond historic resort was the perfect place to relax at the end of long days exploring the park.

Located in the Eastern Sierras, Mammoth Lakes is perfect for skiing and snowboarding in the winter and and hiking, fishing, and scenic gondola rides in the summer.
