Tamron Brings Its Compact 20-40mm F/2.8 Zoom to Nikon Z
Tamron is expanding its Nikon Z-mount lineup with the 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A062), a fast-aperture standard zoom designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. Announced October 8, 2026, the lens is scheduled to go on sale October 22 at $729 USD / $999 CAD. Tamron describes the new zoom as a class-leading combination of compactness, light weight and fast-aperture performance, positioning it as an everyday lens for everything from travel and snapshots to more dedicated creative work.
The lens takes a less conventional approach to the fast standard zoom. Rather than beginning at 24mm or 28mm, the A062 starts at 20mm, providing an ultra-wide perspective for landscapes, architecture, interiors and environmental photography. At the other end of the range, 40mm provides a more natural perspective suited to everyday photography and portraits. On APS-C mirrorless cameras, the lens effectively covers a 30-60mm full-frame-equivalent range, giving it a useful standard-to-short-telephoto perspective.
A compact F2.8 zoom built for everyday shooting
The constant F2.8 maximum aperture is central to the lens’s appeal. It gives photographers a fast aperture across the entire zoom range while maintaining a compact form factor. According to Tamron, the A062 delivers what the company calls class-leading compactness and light weight among fast-aperture standard zoom lenses for full-frame mirrorless cameras.
The lens measures just 3.5 inches (88.7mm) in length and weighs 13.4 ounces (380g). Its maximum diameter is 74.4mm, and it accepts 67mm filters. The 67mm filter size is part of Tamron’s effort to maintain a unified filter diameter across a range of its lenses, making it easier for photographers who use multiple Tamron optics to share filters and accessories.
Tamron has also designed the zoom ring for quick operation. Its 65-degree zoom rotation angle allows photographers to move through the focal range with relatively little movement, an approach intended to improve handling and responsiveness.
20mm opens up creative possibilities
The most distinctive characteristic of the 20-40mm range is its 20mm wide end. Tamron emphasizes the lens’s ability to create dynamic landscapes with a strong sense of depth, while the 40mm setting provides a more natural perspective for everyday subjects and portraits.
The wide end also gives the A062 an interesting capability for close-up photography. At 20mm, the lens focuses as close as 6.7 inches (0.17m) and achieves a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.8. This allows photographers to get extremely close to a subject while still incorporating the surrounding environment—an approach Tamron describes as wide macro photography.
At 40mm, the minimum object distance is 11.4 inches (0.29m), with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.1.
Fast VXD autofocus for stills and video
The A062 uses Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism. The high-speed, high-precision autofocus system is designed to track subjects smoothly and accurately for both still photography and video.
The combination of the 20mm focal length and compact design also makes the lens particularly well suited to video creators. At 20mm, the wide field of view is useful for vlogging and selfies, while the relatively small and lightweight package makes the lens easier to handle during handheld video shooting.
The lens is compatible with TAMRON Lens Utility and TAMRON-LINK, providing additional options for customization, lens operation and firmware management.
Optical performance in a small package
Despite its compact dimensions, the 20-40mm F2.8 features a 12-element, 11-group optical construction. Tamron says the lens uses specialized optical elements to deliver high image quality while maintaining the compact, lightweight design.
The lens employs a nine-blade circular diaphragm and offers a minimum aperture of F22. Its diagonal angle of view ranges from 94°30′ at 20mm to 56°49′ at 40mm.
For photographers working outdoors, the lens also incorporates moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating, adding protection for shooting in less-than-ideal conditions.
Designed as a do-everything zoom
The new Nikon Z version of the 20-40mm F2.8 is less about replacing a traditional 24-70mm F2.8 and more about offering a different balance between speed, range and portability.
Its 20mm starting point gives photographers considerably more breathing room for landscapes, travel, architecture, interiors and environmental portraits, while the 40mm end remains useful for everyday snapshots and portraits. Add the constant F2.8 aperture, close-focusing capability and VXD autofocus, and the lens becomes a flexible option for photographers who want one compact zoom that can handle both stills and video.
That combination is particularly compelling for travel photographers and hybrid creators who may value carrying less gear without giving up a fast aperture. Tamron’s emphasis on portability is also reflected in the lens’s 380g weight and 88.7mm length.
Nikon Z joins the lineup
The 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD was previously available in Sony E-mount and now joins Tamron’s Nikon Z-mount lineup. The company notes that the Nikon Z version is developed, manufactured and sold under a license agreement with Nikon Corporation.
For Nikon Z photographers looking for something more compact than a conventional fast standard zoom—and particularly those who appreciate the creative possibilities of a 20mm wide end—the A062 offers an intriguing combination of portability and versatility.
