The Best Boutique Hotel in Portland

High above Macy’s in Portland’s Pioneer Square lies a chic, luxurious dwelling, where those who appreciate art, design and Tiffany Blue can immerse themselves in this cultural epicenter.  We first visited The Nines in 2009, a year after it opened to great fanfare, debuting as the best hotel in Portland, putting the city on the map in the experiential hospitality scene.

We found The Nines was worthy of its name, but it has, after all, been twelve years. Is it still the best boutique hotel in Portland or is it now past its prime? Let’s dive in, shall we?

What I Loved: The hotel lobby, located on the 8th floor of a historic building, still creates a kaleidoscopic labyrinth of seating areas that blend into the restaurant, Urban Farmer. While it would likely look different if designed today, it still felt luxurious and was a great place for a pre-dinner cocktail.

Something to Know: The Nines is now owned by Marriott. When we first visited in 2009, it felt a little more curated and less like a big corporate brand.

Suite Dreams: The Tiffany blue feels less enchanting to me now as design trends have changed over the last decade, but they have toned it down a little bit since our original stay, taking a more neutral approach with the all white bedding (this could also be due to COVID precautions). We found it odd that the comforter didn’t seem to fit the bed (see photo), but the room was a good size, the bed was comfortable, and it was set up for all the modern conveniences we’ve come to expect (USB plugs on the nightstand, a bathroom with enough light to apply makeup, a huge TV). I do wish they had different bathroom products as the ones they had didn’t feel luxe at all.

Stylish Sips: The lobby proved the perfect place to meet my sister-in-law for a drink before dinner.

Cool FactorThe Nines set the bar for other boutique hotels in Portland to follow. Consider it the OG.

Hero Shot: On the 14th floor, an overhead shot of the lobby.

The Nines, the best boutique hotel in PortlandUpdate from our original stay: There was no Bloody Mary bar this time, and the breakfast menu is more straight forward now, but there is something for everyone including Brioche French toast and Shrimp & Grits.
