Along with the official announcement of the Canon EOS R3 camera, Canon today also revealed two new “budget-friendly” lenses for its EOS R mirrorless system, the ultra-wide RF16mm F2.8 STM prime and RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM telephoto zoom, both of which should appeal to nature photographers. The new lenses will be available in October.

Canon RF16mm F2.8 STM

For wide-angle landscapes and travel photography, the Canon RF16mm F2.8 STM is incredibly compact at just 1.6 inches in length by 2.7 inches in diameter and weighs only 0.4 pounds. The lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 5.1 inches for compositions with prominent foreground elements. The physical ring on the lens can be set to manually adjust focus or to be a customizable Control Ring for adjusting other camera settings. The Canon RF16mm F2.8 STM is priced at $299.

Canon RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM

Wildlife and sports photographers will appreciate the RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM telephoto zoom. Priced at $649, this lens is a great value for photographers wanting an entry-level option for telephoto work—compare that price to the Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM at $2,799. The new lens is the first non L-series Canon lens to be compatible with Canon’s RF 1.4x and 2x tele extenders, for up to 800mm reach. It includes built-in optical image stabilization for up to 5.5 stops of correction or up to 6 stops when used with a compatible camera that supports coordinated IS. The RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM has a minimum focusing distance of 3.94 feet at 100mm, 2.89 feet at 200mm and 3.44 feet at 400mm. It’s also relatively light and compact for a tele zoom, measuring 6.48 inches in length by 3.13 inches in diameter and weighing 1.4 pounds.

“I recently visited Two Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park on a calm, partly cloudy morning,” explains Peoples. “As the clouds danced and morphed overhead, it created truly awe-inspiring scenes. I clicked away, trying different angles and orientations. For this particular photo, I went for a wide-angle view in portrait orientation to include foreground rocks along the shore and the clouds billowing above. I like the result!”

Canon today officially announced specs, pricing and availability for its new professional full-frame mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS R3. Development of the camera was first revealed earlier this year in April. The Canon EOS R3 will be available beginning in November 2021 with a list price of $5,999. Preorder is available now at B&H and other online retailers.

Canon EOS R3

Sitting atop Canon’s EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera lineup, the EOS R3 is positioned between the EOS R5 and Canon’s flagship EOS-1D X DSLRs. Canon built the EOS R3 to emphasize speed and AF performance especially suited for fast action photography like sports and wildlife.

The 24.1-megapixel sensor is a back-illuminated stacked CMOS designed and manufactured by Canon. The camera can capture up to 30 fps blackout-free with its electronic shutter, and up to 12 fps with its mechanical shutter. Canon states that it has minimized rolling shutter effect when shooting with the electronic shutter.

The EOS R3 has a 3.2-inch Vari-angle LCD and a 5.76-million-dot, 120 fps electronic viewfinder. The layout of controls will be familiar to Canon shooters.

The AF system used in the EOS R3, like the EOS R5 and R6, is Canon’s Dual Pixel AF II, and features “evolved” subject tracking for eye, face and head detection, as well as some animals, cars and motorcycles, in low-light conditions down to EV -7.5. The R3’s system uses “Deep-Learning technology” that improves subject detection and tracking.

The EOS R3 also introduces the ability to set initial focus simply by looking at the subject in the camera’s high-resolution EVF. Users can calibrate this “Eye input” AF for different circumstances, such as wearing eyeglasses or contacts, and also for multiple users of the camera.

Along with the advanced AF system, the EOS R3 also incorporates in-body image stabilization that can provide up to 8 stops of correction depending on the lens used.

Build quality is what you would expect from a pro-grade Canon camera, with weather and dust resistance that Canon states is equivalent to EOS-1D series DSLRs. The EOS R3 features a one-piece magnesium alloy design with an integrated vertical grip.

The EOS R3 has two card slots—one CF express and one UHS-II SD.

For those interested in video, the EOS R3 can capture 6K 60p RAW as well as 4K 120p 10-bit uncropped video with Canon Log 3 support. The in-body image stabilization system is available when shooting video and works with lenses that don’t have built-in IS themselves.

Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the next leap forward in full-frame mirrorless cameras – the professional-grade Canon EOS R3. The new camera leverages the advancements in technology that Canon has developed since the original EOS R launch in 2018 and bridges the gap between the immensely popular EOS R5 and the world-renowned Canon flagship EOS-1D X line. The EOS R3 is the first “3” series camera from Canon since the widely used EOS-3 film camera launched in 1998.

The sensor is the first of its kind from Canon, and when combined with the DIGIC X processor, delivers a high-speed readout allowing for continuous blackout-free shooting¹ at up to 30 fps in electronic (silent) shutter mode and up to 12 fps in mechanical shutter, with minimum rolling electronic shutter distortion. The combination also increases the high sensitivity, light-capturing efficiency of a native ISO range of 100-102400, expandable up to 204,800 for still images. Like the EOS R5 and R6, the camera features the improved Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with 1,053 AF Points and evolved EOS iTR tracking down to EV -7.5 for subjects such as eye, face, head, animals², and select cars and motorcycles. In addition, the camera features up to 8 stops³ of in-body image stabilized (IBIS) shake correction.

Leveraging technology and performance feedback from the popular EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras, the EOS R3 uses Deep-Learning technology to further enhance eye and body detection for even better performance during portrait and action-type shooting. Featuring a new 5.76-million-dot and 120fps blackout-free¹ Electronic Viewfinder, the EOS R3 camera will provide photographers with the ability to select the initial area for AF tracking by simply looking directly at the viewfinder location where they want to begin AF. With Eye input AF2 and Servo AF activated, the camera will focus on and track moving subjects at that location in the frame. The camera is capable of shooting 6K 60p RAW and 4K 120p 10-bit uncropped video with Canon Log 3 support, in addition to the possibility for oversampled 4K and RAW movie internal recording. Canon Log 3, which is frequently used in cinema production, helps to reduce the possibility of highlight blowouts. What’s more, the features such as industry standard BT.709, BT.2020 color gamuts, and cinema gamut help to maintain color and tonal consistency. Coordinated 5-axis IBIS helps to correct operator motion or shaking providing dependent video capturing even when using a lens without built-in Optical IS.
