Karl Johan Hotel review, Oslo, Norway

October 20, 2025 by Louie Alma Photography No Comments

Karl Johan Hotel review, Oslo, Norway

It’s a crisp morning in Oslo, and you’ve just crossed the threshold into the Karl Johan Hotel. In the lobby, a gleaming glass elevator hints at a more classical age of Oslo’s city culture, when travel felt grand and purposeful. Just besides, a modern reception desk anchors the scene, staffed by people whose easy warmth makes you feel immediately at home.

The Karl Johan Hotel is situated in part of an impressive 1899 building, facing a leafy park, just 450 metres from Oslo Central Station in one direction and the harbour in the other. The contrast between classical architecture and modern welcome feels perfectly Oslo: a city where every era, from 19th-century grandeur to contemporary cool, carries the same quiet air of prosperity and refinement, as if it has always known how to present its best side no matter the century.

Who Is the Karl Johan Hotel For?

This is a place for travellers who want to be in the very heart of Oslo while wrapped in a sense of understated luxury. It is the setting Norwegians excel at: modest in tone, but quietly confident in quality. Step outside and you are instantly part of the city’s cultural life with shopping, museums, the Royal Palace and theatre just minutes away.  Inside, the spaces are calm, elegant, and designed for comfort that does not need to shout about itself.

Accommodation

Spread across five floors and fully renovated in 2019, the Karl Johan Hotel offers a choice from compact standard rooms of around 15 square metres to a spacious 60 square metre corner suite.

Expect light-proof curtains, a pair of generous pillows, adjustable air-conditioning, a small fridge, a Nespresso machine, and even an iron with ironing board so you are never tempted to skimp on your shirt’s creases. Standard rooms range from $195 to $488 per night, while suites run from $781 to $1,074. All stays include the full breakfast buffet. Check-in is from 3:00 PM and check-out by 12:00 PM. Reservations must be guaranteed with a credit card, and cancellations are free until 4:00 PM on the day of arrival.

Food & Drink

Breakfast

Breakfast

Begin your day beneath the glass-roofed breakfast lounge in Restaurant Ekman, where the buffet settles into place like a well-rehearsed chorus: eggs, fruit, salmon, waffles, with an abundance of local touches like homemade shrimp cocktail and mackerels in tomato that elevate rather than overwhelm. It is the sort of breakfast that feels both generous and serenely Scandinavian in its focus.

Facilities

A fitness room is open 24/7, so if you must jog on holiday, you can do so without facing the Oslo winter. Guests can also enjoy discounted treatments at the nearby Grand Hotel’s Arteria Spa, easily arranged via reception.

The hotel is Green Key-certified too, if sustainability matters to you.

How much

Standard doubles from £303 inclusive of breakfast.

What’s Nearby

Karl Johans gate, the hotel’s namesake boulevard, is Oslo’s main artery: royal yet lively. Named after King Charles XIV John (Karl Johan), the street joined older paths and was christened in 1852, threading together the Royal Palace and parliament. Step outside and you are amid cafés, theatres, boutiques, and tram-free pedestrian flow, a balance of bustle and polite Nordic calm. You are also within easy walking distance of Oslo Central Station, museums, and waterfront promenades, with everything a practical explorer might need close at hand.

Verdict

The Karl Johan Hotel embodies the Norwegian knack for making luxury feel effortless. Every detail is thoughtful, every space refined, but there is no unnecessary grandeur, only a polished confidence that comes from knowing it is already the best in the room. Karl Johan himself, an ex-French marshal turned Scandinavian king, would probably approve. And you, after a few days here, will too.

A New Forest Escape at The Balmer Lawn Hotel

October 20, 2025 by Louie Alma Photography No Comments

A New Forest Escape at The Balmer Lawn Hotel

There are few corners of England where time seems to slow down quite like the New Forest. One moment you’re winding through narrow lanes framed by ancient oaks, the next you’re stopping to let a herd of ponies or cows amble across the road as if they own the place – and in truth, they do.

In this landscape of heath, woodland and wandering wildlife, the Balmer Lawn Hotel and Spa offers a welcoming retreat at the heart of one of Britain’s most beautiful regions.

I recently visited with my wife for a few days. I enjoyed a luxury room with a balcony at the front of the hotel overlooking the sweeping lawn, cricket pitch and forest beyond, where ponies and deer can often be seen grazing.

Balmer Lawn – a Grand Hotel with History

Located on the outskirts of Brockenhurst, Balmer Lawn is an elegant hotel that blends Edwardian charm with modern comfort. This lovely hotel has seen more than a century and a half of history. Originally built as a hunting lodge in the mid-1800s, it later served as a military hospital during both World Wars before settling into life as a luxury retreat for those seeking relaxation and a touch of old-fashioned hospitality.

This luxurious hotel comes with a homely touch – polished oak floors, open fires and soft lighting creating a relaxed ambience.

Step outside the hotel and you’re immediately surrounded by the natural beauty of the New Forest – 220 square miles of protected woodland, heath and meadow

Dining with Local Flair

Food is a serious affair here. The hotel’s award-winning Beresford’s Restaurant is proudly established in the region, with dishes showcasing New Forest and Hampshire produce. The team work closely with trusted suppliers sourcing ingredients locally, ethically and sustainably wherever possible. We enjoyed two wonderful dinners in this delightful restaurant with first-class service matched by a wine list that encourages lingering over dinner rather than rushing through it!

Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea

An alternative dining venue is the Lodge Terrace and Bar, ideal for relaxed lunches or, like us, perfect to enjoy a lovely afternoon tea. On cooler evenings, a log fire and a good glass of red make the perfect pairing. We had a couple of days of excellent weather, so it was a joy to relax on the terrace before dinner.

I must of course mention the wonderful New Forest breakfast served daily in the Beresford Restaurant, highly recommended!

The New Spa and Wellness Centre

The hotel has recently unveiled their brand-new Spa & Wellness Centre blending nature-inspired design with state-of-the-art facilities, creating the perfect space for rest, rejuvenation, and reconnection.

Treatments and facilities include a Finnish Sauna, Steam Room, Ice Room and Rainforest & Monsoon Showers

There are 6 treatment rooms with a dual suite, offering ESPA rituals tailored to your needs. The Relaxation Area offers a serene space to unwind and reconnect before or after your treatment. Add to this private changing & shower rooms – designed for comfort and privacy.

The Call of the New Forest

Designated a National Park in 2005, the New Forest still feels delightfully untamed. William the Conqueror claimed it as a royal hunting ground nearly a thousand years ago, and in many ways it hasn’t changed much since then. Ponies, donkeys, cattle and even pigs roam freely, a living reminder of the area’s ancient commoning rights.

The best way to explore is at a gentle pace. Footpaths and cycle trails thread in every direction from Brockenhurst, linking picturesque villages such as

Lyndhurst and Burley (famous for its witchcraft). You can hire bikes in the village and ride through peaceful woodland or set off on foot across open heathland where the views stretch for miles!

 Motoring Through History at Beaulieu

A short drive from the hotel brings you to Beaulieu, one of the New Forest’s star attractions and home to the world-famous National Motor Museum. I always enjoy visiting here where more than 280 vehicles chart the evolution of motoring – from early pioneers and elegant Rolls-Royces to record-breakers like Bluebird. Exhibits include “We Had One of Those”, “Streets Ahead” from the 1950’s to 1970’s and full of nostalgia, “On Screen Cars” and more. Interactive exhibits, vintage films and displays of motoring memorabilia make it a fascinating stop for all ages. At the time of my visit “Icons of Formula 1” were on display, including a Formula 1 simulator.

The wider Beaulieu estate offers plenty more to explore. Wander through the ruins of Beaulieu Abbey, founded in 1204, then step inside Palace House, still home to the Montagu family. Guides in Victorian dress bring the mansion’s history to life, while the beautifully kept gardens and riverside walks complete the picture.

Coastal Charm Close By

If you’ve time to venture further, the New Forest coast adds another dimension to your stay. The market town of Lymington lies just 15 minutes away, with its cobbled streets, harbour views and weekly market. From the quay, ferries cross to the Isle of Wight, while yachts bob up and down in the marina as seagulls wheel overhead.

VERDICT: My wife and I had a great break here, a special place. Peace, tranquillity and relaxation are key words for the area. Escape to Balmer Lawn Hotel & Spa, it’s a great hotel in a super location, we can’t wait to return!

Fact File

David stayed as a guest of Balmer Lawn Hotel in Brockenhurst, in the heart of the New Forest. There is currently a three-nights-for-the-price-of-two offer, costing from £155 per person, based on two people sharing a room. The price includes full breakfast each morning, and use of the hotel’s leisure facilities. The hotel is dog friendly (£25 per dog per night).

Balmer Lawn Hotel & Spa, Lyndhurst Road, Brockenhurst, Hampshire SO42 7ZB  Rooms: From around £160 per night B&B (check for offers and spa packages).

While you’re there:

Visit Beaulieu Motor Museum, check out the coastal town of Lymington or explore the New Forest on foot or by bike – ponies permitting.
