Camera Settings to Change NOW for the Best Photos Possible (VIDEO)

One of the easiest ways to get the best results from a camera is to configure it properly for your type of photography. In the video below you’ll learn what one pro says are the “seven camera settings you should always change.”

Keep in mind that this isn’t necessarily a one-time task, as it’s important to revisit key settings as your skills evolve. The same holds true when purchase a new camera, modify your style, or move on to different types of subjects.

Julia Trotti is a successful Australian pro, and a very popular instructor. She specializes in fashion photography, but the advice she provides in this episode is applicable for just about any genre you prefer. Best yet, the settings she discusses are equally valid for mirrorless cameras, DSLRs, and even configurable point-and-shoot models.

Trotti concentrates on seven categories of settings, explaining the best options to choose based upon your particular needs. She says, “The absolute first thing I do with any new camera is head to the menu and change the file type. This typically involves a choice between JPEG, Raw, or a combination of Raw & JPEG.

You’ll learn the differences between these options as pertains to image quality, storage requirements, and the complexity of post-processing. Another key consideration is how you typically use the photos you shoot, i.e., making large prints, sharing online, or submitting them for publication.

Another factor when it comes to files types is selecting between Compressed and Uncompressed—a choice that has significant implications regarding file size and editing convenience. Here Trotti notes that, “Compressed files are smaller in size, while still retaining similar or the same image qualities.” She also explains why compressed files may take longer to open in your image-editing software.

While Trotti always shoots Raw, Uncompressed files for reasons she explains, keep this in mind when considering these and the other settings discussed in this episode: While Trotti is a working pro who requires maximum image quality, more casual photographers may benefit from camera settings that differ from those she prefers.
