The Hobson Cambridge by Adina aparthotel review

Perfectly located deep in historic Cambridge, this brand new aparthotel, The Hobson Cambridge by Adina, beautifully fitted out and creatively carved from a Grade-II listed former stables, police station and fire station retaining the original stone staircases and stained glass windows, is the perfect base for a cultural visit and comfortable, cost-conscious longer stay or city break.

Who for

Tourists of course, but let’s not forget all those parents visiting their student offspring. By offering clean modern kitchenette facilities in the rooms, think sink, microwave and fridge (and a kettle of course), as well as fresh things to heat up for sale in the lobby at all hours, The Hobson allows guests to enjoy stylish, comfortable rooms for longer stays that won’t break the bank.

Accommodation

There are five kinds of studio apartments in the fifty-six available, so being on my own, I took a single. It was quite compact but very comfortable, and like all the rooms it had all the Aparthotel facilities; a good sized stylish bathroom (no bath) and rather futuristic touch controls for the lighting throughout.

A Studio Premier Room will sleep three, as it has a Sofa bed along with room to work, while a standard Studio Premier Room is double windowed and spacious. The Studio Room King and Queen rooms are the largest. All have quality textiles and muted contemporary colour schemes, a largeTV (with European channels for foreign guests), air con, solid WiFi connections, plenty of 13A sockets for work, plus USB sockets by the bed to charge mobiles.

Facilities

Because of the nature of the hotel, the stylish reception has all kinds of useful things on offer 24 hours a day, from food to be heated in the room, to fresh milk, snacks and plenty of drink options. Plus, cute boxes contain charging cables, power adapters and even condoms. A supermarket is just over the road, which is useful for stocking up on essentials.

Food and Drink

For those not into self-sufficiency, the recently opened Oz & Isle restaurant is perfect. A beautiful space crafted from the old drill yard and verdant with exotic plants, its metal-framed glass arched roof soars above you, generously lighting your full-on breakfast with its summery options and very good coffee.

Later in the day, it romanticises your afternoon tea or evening drinks. Adina is an Aussie hotel brand, and that Aussieness shines through in the seasonal all-day menu that’s ideal for casual sharing or simply hogging all to yourself. After creative cocktails, a generous platter of carefully curated local cheeses (don’t miss the Baron Bigod) was wonderful, as was a selection of cured meats. Saffron and lemon arancini were crunchy and moreish, and sirloin steak came ready sliced for sharing. A Celeriac steak, with mushroom caramel, truffled wild mushrooms and a tarragon peppercorn and white miso butter is there to give vegetarians something to rave over too

What’s nearby?

Well Cambridge, obviously, is overflowing with things to see and do all year round, from punting adventures and college tours around nearby King’s, Trinity and St Catharine’s, to the many museums like the nearby Fitzwilliam, a gorgeous space that’s free to enter and packed with exhibitions, events and a rotating display of artworks and objects from throughout history. Add to that a plethora of interesting shops, cafes, restaurants and the nearby Cambridge Cheese Company, where you should buy some of that fantastic Baron Bigod to take home with you, car windows open. If not in a car, then Cambridge Railway Station is just a mile away.
